Soils are the base of life on Earth and directly impact agriculture, economies, and societies. Societies that manage their soils through traditional agricultural methods like terraces and organic practices tend to be more prosperous, while those that mismanage soils through overexploitation, deforestation, erosion, and overgrazing tend to decline. Protecting soils requires erosion control, organic agriculture, forestation of slopes, and planning agriculture, pastures, and forests appropriately for each land type.
