Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in the early 1800s under the name Isabella Baumfree. After slavery was abolished in New York in 1827, she changed her name to Sojourner Truth and moved to New York City to pursue her dreams. Sojourner Truth later sold her house in New York and bought a new home west of Battle Creek, Michigan, where she died on November 26, 1883 at the age of 83.
