Hawaii's property crime rate is significantly higher than the national average, and the document reviews case studies from Pueblo, Colorado, and Dudley, England, to identify potential solutions. In Pueblo, a mentorship program for teenage girls reduced property damage incidents, while in Liverpool, the installation of lockable gates led to a 37% decrease in burglaries. Although the demographics differ from Hawaii, these approaches suggest that youth programs and improved security could help deter property crime in the state.

- 4. I found one solution in Pueblo, Colorado that primarily focused on providing mentorship, social and life skills training, as well as tutoring and homework help for Mexican American teenage girls for a minimum of 2 hours a week for 9 months.
- 5. Study participants were on average 14.8 years old, were 95% Hispanic, were likely to have been arrested in the past, and with a 2.6% average number of past arrests.
- 6. Findings from the solution found girls who participated in the program were significantly less likely to report that they damaged property.
- 7. The second solution I looked at was from Liverpool, England and involved placing lockable gates to restrict access of an alley to local residents with the aim of reducing opportunities for potential offenders.
- 8. In Liverpool, the installation of each gate protected approximately 134 houses. A total of 3,178 gates were installed that protected 106 distinct blocks of adjacent houses, which each contained about 362 residential properties.
