ASEAN+ Coral Reef Initiative: Southeast Asian Marine Protection Area Network
This is a simple presentation that was supposed to be delivered as a flash presentation for the final assignment of Marine Systems and Policy course at The University of Edinburgh. Too bad that the slide never see the light since it wasn't necessary to use it The paper itself is a policy brief for an idea of expanding the already acknowledged success of The Coral Triangle Initiative, upscaled to a regional level utilising an already existing ASEAN platform. This is a bare presentation for a 3 minutes talk, so it's a definitely flawed and imperfect one. Therefore, I'm open for any kind of critic and discussion. The abstract for the paper is as follows. --- Southeast Asias Coral Reefs formation constitutes 34 percent of the worlds coral population. With the dependency of 10 ASEANs countries to the marine resource in this area, overexploitation and degradation of coral reefs are inevitable. An effort has been established to save the coral in this area, which is The Coral Triangle Initiative for Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF/The Coral Triangle), which constitutes only three ASEAN countries. This effort could be replicated to form a stronger institution, to support the existing MPA Network, expanding and replicating and sharing the knowledge gained with other ASEAN member countries. With several organizations already working on this issue in ASEAN area, such as CTI, UNEP WCMC, and ASEANs Center for Biodiversity, ASEAN as a strong governing institution of this area could step up to lead in the creation of MPA network. This policy brief proposes ASEAN to take the initiative towards the realization of Integrated MPA Network framework that will emphasize on the representativeness of the MPA in the region, replication of the knowledge, regional and integrated ecosystem service assessment, a strong political will and governance between the countries, to maintain ecosystem resilience. This initiative will include all key stakeholders, within and from the outside of ASEAN itself, such as international NGOS, Timor Leste, and Papua New Guinea. The initiative will encompass a timeframe of 10 years which will be divided into 3 sub-period.
