He contributes to charitable organizations like Special Olympics Illinois, which hosts the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run fundraising event. The Torch Run began in 1986 with under 100 runners carrying the torch along five routes, raising $14,039.93. It has since grown exponentially, raising over $1 million in 2001, $2 million in 2006, and $4.1 million in 2015. In 2016, 3,000 officers carried the Flame of Hope along 23 routes for 1,500 miles before the Special Olympics Summer Games opening ceremony.
