Time and Speed
Speed is the rate of an objects
change in position along a line.
 Average speed is determined by
dividing the distance travelled by
the time spent to cover the
distance
 (Speed = distance/time or S = d/t,
read as distance per time). The
base SI unit for speed is meters per
second (m/s).
The commonly used unit for speed is
Kilometers/hour (kph or km/h) for
the Metric system and miles/hour
(mph or mi/hr) for the English system.
S =

for finding Speed
d = st for finding distance
t =

for finding time
Formula

Sample Problem 1
A car left the house and travelled
at an average speed of 60 kph.
How many minutes will it take for
the car to reach the school which
is 8 km away from the house?
Given: S = 60 km/hr d = 8km
Unknown: t = ?
Formula: t =

Sample Problem 2
Sebastian stood at the edge of the
cliff and shouted facing down. He
heard the echo of his voice 4
seconds after he shouted. Given
that the speed of sound in air is 340
m / s, how deep is the cliff?
Given: S = 340 m/s t = 4s
Unknown: d = ?
Formula: d = st
Solution: d = (340m/s)(4s)
Answer: d = 1360 m
Temperature
is the measurement of the degree of
hotness or coldness of an object or
substance
commonly used units are Celsius ( C) for
the Metric system and Fahrenheit ( F) for
the English system, the base SI unit for
temperature is the Kelvin (K).
Unlike the Celsius and Fahrenheit
which are considered degrees,
the Kelvin is considered as an
absolute unit of measure and
therefore can be worked on
algebraically.
At what temperature are celsius
and degree Fahrenheit the same?
 - 40
 - 40
Hereunder are some conversion factors:
 = (5/9)( 32)
 = (9/5)() + 32
K =  + 273.15
For example:
Convert 100 to
 = (9/5)(100) + 32
= 180 + 32 = 212
Example no. 2
Maria was preparing the oven to bake
brownies. The recipes direction was to pre-
heat the oven to 350 F but her oven
thermometer was in 甬C. What should be the
thermometer reading before Maria puts the
baking pan full of the brownie mix in the
oven?
Given: 350 F
Unknown: 甬C
Formula: = (5/9)( 32)
Solution: = (5/9)(350 32)
(5/9)(318) = 1590/9
Answer: 176.67
Reading Your Electric Meter
 To determine the electric
consumption for a given
period, subtract the initial
reading from the final reading.
 Example
The pictures below show the electric meter reading of
Larrys canteen
If the electric charge is P9.50 / kWh, how much will Larry
pay the electric company for the given period?
Given: Present Reading = 10860 KwH
Previous Reading = 10836 KwH
Unknown: Electric Bill
Formula:
   p $$
Solution:(10860KwH 10836Kwh) x Php 9.5
(24)x(Php 9.5)
Answer: Php 228.00
