Organized football began in the 1860s in high schools and colleges in the US and UK, with different rules between institutions. In 1876 the Intercollegiate Football Association was formed to standardize rules across colleges. FIFA was founded in 1904 to be the international governing body, and the first World Cup was held in 1930 in Uruguay.
