This document summarizes two social experiences - seeing a production of Beauty and the Beast and attending a sporting event - with a group of classmates from a First Year Seminar class. It discusses getting to know the classmates better through talking before, during, and after each event. Both experiences provided opportunities for social interaction outside of the classroom and helped the author learn more personal details about their classmates, such as their backgrounds and aspirations.

1. In our group, we went to see the Marshall Artist Series Disney’s Beauty and the Beast with
Nicholas, Adaira, Joshua, and Kyquan. It was a fun experience seeing this production. It stayed
as faithful as it could to the original production, but due to a smaller budget, lacked some of the
original Broadway sets and effects. We meet up before hand and talked for a while and walked
over to the Keith Albee Theater. It was pretty fun talking to them. But that’s really all we did
was talk before and after and during the 20 minute intermission. I got to know them a little better
outside of class instead of just sitting with them in class. Like I learned Josh played baseball in
California which is where he is originally from. Also, that Nic is from Nigeria. It was a valuable
social experience in that since. But we ended up doing this again with a sports game. I think it
was baseball, but I really don't know; sports are not my strong point. Socially, it was similar to
Beauty and the Beast with us just taking, but we also stopped to eat at McDonald’s on the way
back. I felt as if I got to know them even more from this. Because the sporting event allows more
time to talk to each other than what theater does. Also, stopping to eat allowed for more
interaction as well. Like this time, I learned Kyquan aspires to be part of the NFL ultimately. So,
in the end I really enjoyed the two experiences.
