1. Gregor Mendel conducted experiments with pea plants between 1856-1863 to study inheritance of traits.
2. He found that traits are inherited in discrete units (now called genes) and showed that dominant and recessive traits are transmitted from parents to offspring in predictable ratios.
3. Mendel's work established the foundations of classical genetics and heredity.
