During the Cold War:
1. The US provided economic aid to Western Europe through the Marshall Plan, giving it substantial influence. NATO was formed as a Western military alliance, while the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact emerged as an Eastern counterpart.
2. The US became involved in defending capitalism and democracy globally, taking on the role of "world police" formerly held by Great Britain. The CIA was established to monitor threats worldwide.
3. Soviet foreign policy under Stalin aimed to regain lost tsarist territories and expand communist influence through new satellite states and links to communist movements.
