How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillaryÌýtexts?
FontsThis style of font has been used on both the poster and the front cover of our digipak. We wanted to try and achieve a font that was simple to read, but was effective and that also suited are ‘Pop-rock’ genre. We decided to not make the font bold for the poster because we wanted the image to be the attribute that stood out. The fact that the two fonts are the same, makes the two recognisable to each other. It also keeps to the house style.DigipakPoster
ImageryThe two images that appear on the poster and middle of the digipak are very similar. The image creates the sense of house style, which is memorable to people who see it. The hands are a symbol for the song. The reason being is because our video is about a couple who are together, who then break up, who then get back together. We thought that them holding hands was appropriate. The image suggests that they are holding on too each other. ‘You were always hard to hold, so letting go ain’t easy’. This is a line from our song which relates strongly to the imagery we have decided to create.
BackgroundThe background of our poster and digipack are exactly the same. The reason being is because we feel to create recognition and house style, the key is to have a common background. A background establishes the mood and tone of the house style. For example in our project, are background is a creamy/grey cloud affect. Which would relate to a soothing, soft mood. The soft effect of the background relates too the imagery shown on the poster and digipak. The soft effect of the background which is created by clouds relates to the hands holding on by just their fingertips which creates an endearing image.
ConventionsThe black and white images that are seen throughout our music video link to the two ancillary tasks. The backgrounds that the ancillary tasks have are similar to a serpia effect. The colouring is not black and white however is not far off it. Therefore there is a constant taste of the past being brought into the video and a dated feel into the ancillary tasks. Another key convention that links the music video to the ancillary tasks is the cross-dissolves. These again were used throughout our music video. The cross dissolve gives a much more slower approach to the imagery and gives a soft transition. The mood that the cross-dissolve gives the music video in places, can relate to the general theme of our ancillary tasks. Our ancillary tasks are not very vibrant and loud. They are more sophisticated and mature. The mood is similar when it comes to the pace of the editing and the ancillary tasks.
Inspiration for the Digipak & Poster We needed both our ancillary tasks and music video to be successful as each other because our ancillary tasks are promoting the product and creating an image for the band. The band that inspired us the most was ‘The Script’. The reason being is because not only is their music a lot like our artists, their digipak is very effective yet basic. This is the idea we wanted to create for our digipak/poster. The idea of hands being attached to each other instantly reminded us of ‘The Scripts’ new album. We were all familiar with the artistry on their digipak and thought it was a brilliant idea to try and portray the same feeling you get when you look at ‘The Script’s’ digipak. The other band that influenced our digipak/poster was ‘The Verve’. After browsing through existing album posters, we stumbled across ‘The Verve’s’ basic but moving poster. We wanted our background to have the same effect as ‘The Verve’s’ without having the same imagery. So we played around in Photoshop and found a suitable, affective background for our ancillary tasks. ‘The Script’ & ‘The Verve’ inspired us to create our ancillary tasks.
