A group of 50 passengers from a sunken cruise ship wash ashore on an uninhabited island. They have one week's worth of food from the lifeboats. The island is 20 miles long with forests, meadows, and a creek. The group must make immediate and long-term survival decisions. They later discover the island is inhabited and are then attacked, forcing changes to their strategies.

This document discusses slavery in early U.S. history and how the condition of Africans changed over time. It provides statistics on slave numbers, excerpts from slave narratives, and asks how the experience of being a slave would affect someone after emancipation. The central questions are about why slavery existed and how and why the condition of Africans in America changed over centuries.
A web page is a document or resource that can be accessed through a web browser and displayed on a monitor or mobile device. There are different types of web pages including affiliate sites that sell third-party products and receive commissions, archive sites that preserve valuable electronic content, and the World Wide Web (WWW) which is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet using Uniform Resource Locators (URLs).
This document discusses how quant trading and dark pools have come to dominate the markets in Europe and beyond. It outlines how regulatory changes like MiFID led to growth in multi-lateral trading facilities and off-exchange trading between major banks and institutions. Now, over-the-counter markets with little transparency have much larger trading volumes than public exchanges. Traditional investors and day traders have little chance of success against high-frequency quant strategies that access non-public order flows and data. The landscape has changed dramatically and any trader ignoring these new realities does so at their own peril.
This project aims to better understand and manage environmental change in rural-urban fringe areas through interdisciplinary research. It will explore concepts from spatial planning and ecosystem services to identify management issues and needs. The research team, consisting of academics and practitioners, will apply the findings to two case study areas and involve local stakeholders. The project seeks to develop new tools and approaches for managing uncertainty and transition in these spaces and promote integrated rural-urban fringe management.
This document discusses the compatibility between spatial planning and the ecosystem approach. It argues that both frameworks could benefit from being more interdisciplinary and addressing the divide between theory and practice. The paper also proposes reconceptualizing the green belt to take a more holistic, place-based approach that considers the connections and dependencies within a given area. Finally, it reflects on the challenges of fully integrating these approaches and suggests more experimentation is still needed to develop their relationship further.

Room Key was founded by six major hotel chains to differentiate the hotel booking experience through personalization. The presentation discusses using intent, geography, and predictive behavioral analytics to better understand customers and improve recommendations. It describes how Room Key uses real-time decisioning powered by customer, location, and transaction data to optimize property suggestions based on each customer's unique situation. The goal is to change the standard hotel search process by anticipating customer needs rather than relying solely on basic location filters.
This earthquake in the Middle East in 1201-1202 was the largest in history. It measured between 7.6 and 11 degrees on the Richter scale and caused over 1 million deaths across Syria, Iraq, Anatolia, Upper Egypt, Acre, Tyre and Naplusa from the earthquake itself and subsequent droughts and flooding. Scientists debate whether it was actually one extremely large earthquake or two separate quakes, with dates of May 20th 1201 for the first and June 6th 1202 for the second.
