Since the perils of the Great Recession several years ago, the American economy has made a significant recovery. This can be seen in a number of ways. New jobs are being created at higher rates than have been seen in decades. The unemployment numbers are down considerably. Home values have begun to rebound. The stock market is soaring. Oil is under $50 per barrel serving as an economic boost for many Americans. In many ways, todays economic climate is perhaps as ideal as it could be. However, the reality is that consumer confidence is still quite shaken. A recent poll conducted by the New York Times revealed that the public is more pessimistic than it was after the 2008 financial crisis that it is possible to work hard and become rich (Sorkin & Three-Brenan 1). This view may seem incongruent with the current economic stability; however, a careful consideration of recent history and future trends shows that this viewpoint may have significant merit. The truth is that the American Dreamfor decades the one defining hope for many Americansis on the verge of extinction.

The concept of the American Dream has consistently centered around the belief thateven those on the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum can attain success in life through hard work. This was the result of a thriving economy, easy access to higher education, and the recognition that hard work would be rewarded. In many ways, this concept derived from the fact that many people immigrated to America seeking a better life. These immigrants worked their way up on the societal ladder over time, with each generation hoping that their children would have it better than they did. Thus, the trend of upward social mobility was born. The concept of rewarding hard work largely originated from the industrial revolution and the policies of the early automotive companies who paid their workers higher wages in order to allow them to earn enough to become customers as well. The plight of the American worker improved over time through actions of labor unions, employment laws, and a steadily increasing wage. There were many reasons to support the notion of the American Dream.
In many arguments, it is important to define key terms. Here the student defines the term American dream. This is important because different people may have different ideas as to what this term means.
However, the reality is that many of those reasons are no longer present in society. First, consider the role of unions in promoting American economic mobility. Labor unions served as primary catalysts in support of worker rights and were nearly single-handedly responsible for higher wages, safer working conditions, and increased benefits for American workers. Since the perils of the Great Recession several years ago, the American economy has made a significant recovery. This can be seen in a number of ways. New jobs are being created at higher rates than have been seen in decades. The unemployment numbers are down considerably. Home values have begun to rebound. The stock market is soaring. Oil is under $50 per barrel serving as an economic boost for many Americans. In many ways, todays economic climate is perhaps as ideal as it could be. However, the reality is that consumer confidence is still quite shaken. A recent poll conducted by the New York Times revealed that the public is more pessimistic than it was after the 2008 financial crisis that it is possible to work hard and become rich (Sorkin & Three-Brenan 1). This view may seem incongruent with the current economic stability; however, a careful consideration of recent history and future trends shows that this viewpoint may have significant merit. The truth is that the American Dreamfor decades the one defining hope for many Americansis on the verge of extinction.

The concept of the American Dream has consistently centered around the belief thateven those on the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum can attain success in life through hard work. This was the result of a thriving economy, easy access to higher education, and the recognition that hard work would be rewarded. In many ways, this concept derived from the fact that many people immigrated to America seeking a better life. These immigrants worked their way up on the societal ladder over time, with each generation hoping that their children would have it better than they did. Thus, the trend of upward social mobility was born. The concept of rewarding hard work largely originated from the industrial revolution and the policies of the early automotive companies who paid their workers higher wages in order to allow them to earn enough to become customers as well. The plight of the American worker improved over time through actions of labor unions, employment laws, and a steadily increasing wage. There were many reasons to support the notion of the American Dream.
In many arguments, it is important to define key terms. Here the student defines the term American dream. This is important because different people may have different ideas as to what this term means.
However, the reality is that many of those reasons are no longer present in society. First, consider the role of unions in promoting American economic mobility. For my article, I chose to read and write about the article titled "The gap between the rich and the poor in the US has widened to a record high, and it mirrors the growth of 'dynastic wealth". The article goes on to state that in 2018, income inequality had hit a record breaking mark in history. The article also went on to explain that middle class Americans aren't living too comfortably and they are behind on home ownerships and retirement savings due to debts they have to pay off. "The 15 family dynasties in the US own a combined $618 billion, according to the left-leaning Institute for Policy Studies'油Billionaire Bonanza report油(Links to an external site.)." The rich have been getting richer, while the middle class Americans are staying at the same rate. It's quite mind boggling to know that the combined wealth of just three families total up to 油hundreds of billions of dollars when 油there are families struggling to put food on the table for their families and merely make ends meet. I chose this topic and article, because everyday the income inequality gap continues to grow. People go to college so they can get good paying jobs and live a good life, but a lot of the time they still end up stuck between a rock and a hard place, because they have student loans and debt that they can't pay off. Keith Schemel Professor Blanco First Year Seminar 3 February 2014 State of the Union Analysis On the evening of 28 January 2014, President Barack Obama addressed the nation in the presidents annual State of the Union, which is a recap of his following year, as well as sets a blueprint for ways to achieve new ideas for the country in order to make America prosper. President Obama focused on minimum wage, the conclusion of two wars, economic equality, amongst other controversial issues. Upon watching the speech via internet the following day, I could not help but be irritated with the president and his agenda, stemming from my right wing views on politics. The presidents first point one inequality was nothing short of a typical liberal statement regarding how women do not earn as much as men in the workforce, despite accounting for 50% of the force. When you look deeper into statistics, men are more educated, in an academic sense, on average, for instance, 71% of students who obtained a PhD. In 2012 were men. Furthermore, there are more men serving as medical doctors, engineers, and lawyers, as well as other money- making professions. This is not a result of inequality since women are open to the same education opportunities as men. Yes, women make $0.23 less than men on average, which is a remarkably insignificant number to be arguing over about.
- 2. Obamas stance on minimum wage led to another disagreement between me and the president. Raising minimum wage to $10.10, as Obama announced, will do nothing but damage an economy just coming out of a terrible recession. As history states when it comes to raising minimum wage, it will work for a brief period of time until consumer prices begin to increase ultimately creating a stalemate once again, this was evident in 1978 when President Carter was able to increase wages leading to massive inflation that his predecessor, Ronald Reagan had to deal with. The one and only part of President Obamas speech that I agreed with was his position on searching for alternative energy sources. This, as well as his position on gay marriage, are the only two issues that I agree with. However, I disagree on his stance that the burning of fossil fuels are contributing to climate change, but alternative energy sources are needed to replace the eventual extinction of fossil fuels. All in all, I am disappointed with our president for lacking common sense, and only acting on what is in his heart. Furthermore, the failure to address the NSA, or the other several scandals, like Benghazi and the IRS, frustrated me. America does not need three more years of the Obama Administration.
