SATA channels provide better airflow than PATA connections and allow each device to be attached via its own channel. Most motherboards come with 4 or more SATA connections and some include 1-2 eSATA ports. SATA offers faster speeds up to 6Gbps, longer cable lengths up to 1 meter, fewer pins which reduces power consumption, and allows hot swapping of devices.
