Helen spent a summer and winter at home in Alabama after controversies about the Frost King episode faded from her mind. She was afraid to write again due to fears of plagiarism accusations. With encouragement from her teacher Anne Sullivan, Helen resumed writing at age 12 by publishing an autobiographical piece in Youth's Companion magazine. In 1893, Helen traveled to Washington D.C., Niagara Falls, and the World's Fair in Chicago, where she experienced exhibits she had only read about and learned from Alexander Graham Bell.
