Workers in Malaya held over 300 strikes in 1947 involving almost 70,000 workers to fight for better pay and working conditions. The strikes grew more contentious with the involvement of the Malayan Communist Party, who sought to blame problems in the post-WWII period on the British. Many workers were encouraged to join trade unions to participate in the strikes.
