Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying its good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation thats least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state theyre comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Het Missiehuis St. Michael heeft samen met stichting
BOEi en Clevis en Kleinjans Architecten een
structuurvisie gemaakt voor de transformatie van het
kloosterdorp Steyl.
Doel is het doorontwikkelen van het kloosterdorp Steyl
met behulp van de inherente kernwaarden zoals ze
besloten liggen in de traditie van de Arnold Janssen
Familie.
Het betreft het geestelijk erfgoed en de tuinen en
gebouwen, vallend onder de stichting kloosterdorp
Steyl (in oprichting).

5. KEURMERK
STEYL
Door het introduceren van het merk STEYL wordt een
binding gevormd tussen alle te bestemmen
onderdelen. Het merk is de weerspiegeling van alle
kernwaarden die gelden binnen het kloosterdorp.
Nieuwe initiatieven worden beoordeeld op deze
kernwaarden en kunnen zeer verschillend van aard
zijn. Zo blijft niet alleen de (kern)kwaliteit van het
kloosterdorp gewaarborgd, maar ontstaat een
gemeenschappelijke basis voor verschillende
activiteiten waartussen nieuwe onderlinge verbanden
kunnen ontstaan.

7. TOETSING
Iedere nieuwe huurder met bijbehorende activiteit zal
beoordeeld worden in een 3-tal fasen. In de 1e fase
wordt er gekeken of de activiteit past binnen de
kernwaarden en kwaliteiten van het kloosterdorp Steyl.
Vervolgens wordt er getoetst op de exploitatie. De
nieuwe activiteit dient zelf financieel gezond te zijn.
De vraag is ook: draagt het bij aan het duurzaam in
stand houden van het Kloosterdorp. Als laatste wordt
gekeken of de activiteit passend is binnen de
bestemming.

KERAMIEKMUSEUM
Door het openen van de gang tussen Missiemuseum
en oud St. Gregor wordt het (weer) mogelijk alle
gebouwdelen met elkaar te verbinden. Missiemuseum,
oud St. Gregor en nieuw St. Gregor worden hiermee
als een ketting aan elkaar geregen. Deze verbinding
zal leiden tot onverwachte museale opstellingen, o.a.
door (keramische) kunst ten toon te stellen in de oude
kloostergang. Naast het missiemuseum is er hierdoor
ook plaats voor het keramiekmuseum de Tiendschuur.
Via deze levensader is het tevens mogelijk de boven-
en onderkerk als multifunctionele ruimten toegankelijk te
maken en de leef- en sterfkamer van Arnoldus Janssen
te bereiken.

MISSIEMUSEUM
Missiemuseum en de pelgrimskamers blijven
gehandhaafd. Mogelijk zijn deze gastenkamers te
gebruiken als overloop van het Missiehuis St.
Michael, Centrum St. Michael en/of het H.
Hartklooster. De depots op de verdiepingen kunnen
worden opengesteld en zijn al dan niet onder
begeleiding te bezoeken.
Herstel van de monumentale waarden:
-renovatie van de pelgrimkamers
-herstel & restauratie van de (lekkende) daken
-zolders functioneel inzetten als depotruimte

MOUBISVILLA
De vergaderruimten en kantoren op de begane
grond zullen gehandhaafd blijven. De verdieping
wordt omgebouwd tot extra gastenkamers voor
middellang verblijf. Zij worden ingezet voor
bijvoorbeeld 30-daagse retraites, (bege-)
leidingsprogrammas van het Missiehuis en de
Arnoldus Janssen Academie, het afronden van
studies, parttime-religieuzen en het beheer van de
gastenontvangst.

OUD ST. GREGOR
De doorbraak naar het Missiemuseum ontsluit deze
vleugel en vormt hiermee de overgang naar nieuw
St. Gregor. De begane grond zal ruimte bieden voor
kunst uit de Tiendschuur en de nieuwe museum-
annex kloosterwinkel. De verdieping wordt
omgebouwd tot expositieruimte/vergaderruimte en
de werk- en sterfkamer van Moeder Josepha zal
weer in ere worden hersteld. De zolder wordt
ingezet als depotruimte (beleefbaar) met
multifunctioneel inzetbare studieruimten voor
bezoekers en de Arnoldus Janssen Academie.

16. KLOOSTERcomplex
NIEUW ST. GREGOR
Nieuw St. Gregor zal verbouwd worden tot
kloosterzorghotel en een hospice. Dit is het meest
rustige deel van het complex met de werk- en
sterfkamer van Arnoldus Janssen. In combinatie met
de werk- en sterfkamer van Moeder Maria wordt de
bijzondere geschiedenis van het gebouw, waar de
scheiding der zustercongregaties heeft
plaatsgevonden, weer zichtbaar gemaakt en
daarmee integraal onderdeel van de totale
belevingswaarde.

+ WERKPLAATSEN
Door de combinatie van functies: wonen met
aandacht en zorg, ontmoeting en ontspanning en
werk (museum en ambachtelijkheid) ontstaat een
synergie tussen verschillende bouwdelen. In de
Werkplaatsen is ruimte voor ambachtelijk werken en
leren in de praktijk middels kloosterbakkerij,
kloosterbrouwerij, proeflokaal, smederij, wasserij,
meubelwerkplaats en timmerwerkplaats.
In het Drukkerijcomplex is plaats voor:

WERELDPAVILJOEN
Het drukkerijcomplex zal plaats gaan bieden aan het
Wereldpaviljoen, een internationaal belevingscentrum
voor mondiale vorming van kinderen, jongeren en
volwassenen. De bedoeling is om bezoekers op een
attractieve wijze kennis te laten maken met andere
culturen, de millenniumdoelen, fair trade en
duurzaamheid. Tevens is het een manier om te laten
ervaren dat ook in de derde wereld met respect voor
natuur en landschap aan land- en tuinbouw wordt
gedaan.
Kernwaarden voor het wereldpaviljoen zijn;
bewustwording, openheid en respect. Hiermee wordt
een bijdrage geleverd aan de vorming van een actief
wereldburgerschap.

19. KLOOSTERtuin
De tuinen waren een integraal onderdeel van het
kloosterdorp. Het doel was beleving van de
schoonheid van de natuur, voedselvoorziening, stilte,
rust en spiritualiteit. De tuinen zullen worden hersteld
in hun oorspronkelijke waarde.

-herstel van de kloostermuren
-tuin van St. Gregor, m.n. ziekenbarak, glas-in-
lood verrijzeniskapel, het prieel & de kruidentuin
-symmetrie in de tuin van de Goede Herder
-herstel & restauratie van de grotten, koude
bakken, kassen & werkplaatsen voor groepen vanuit
bv. de WAA (sociale werkvoorziening)
-terugbrengen van de tuinbouwcultuur van fruit,
groente, kruiden & bloemen
