This is a model I prepared for my students on how to complete the role of Summarizer for our literature circle groups. We are currently reading "Wringer" by Jerry Spinelli.
3. Summary Write a paragraph that summarizes the assigned chapters. MUST be at least 8 sentences long (about 2 sentences per chapter). Wringer is the story of Palmer LaRue, a 9-year-old boy. Palmer is worried about his 10th birthday when he will become a wringer. Wringers are boys that wring the necks of wounded birds at the annual Pigeon Day contest. Palmer doesnt want to be one, but wants to belong to the group. Chapters 1-4 are about Palmers 9th birthday party when Beans, Mutto, and Henry, come over to his house. The boys are rude, but Palmer is happy that they showed up. After leaving his house, they taunt his neighbor Dorothy. Later, they go to the park to play.
4. Key Points 1. Palmer doesnt want to be a wringer. 2. Beans, Mutto, and Henry come to Palmers birthday party. 3. The boys bring presents and nickname Palmer Snots. 4. Palmer goes with them to tease Fishface, Dorothy Gruzik. 5. Palmer goes to the park and remembers his first Pigeon Day. He runs away from the soccer field.
