Using Text Structures to Summarize

                                  Narrative Text Structure

When teaching students how to write a summary they should first analyze the
structure of the text to identify the narrative components. The components
          of a narrative are:

Beginning– the author describes the setting or identifies the setting, introduc-
es characters and identifies the when the story takes place

Middle– this is the part of the story where all of the action takes place. The
character usually encounters a problem and has to overcome a variety of ob-
stacles in seeking a solution to the problem. Sometimes in the middle of the
story the author will present a temporary solution to the problem which will
only be a temporary solution to the problem.

End– at the end the story the character solves his/her problem and the author
will sometimes leave the reader with moral to the story.

When students summarize a narrative they too should follow the narrative
structure because a summary is a shortened version of a text excluding minor
details that do not add or take away from the main idea of the text. A stu
dent’s summary should have a beginning which talks about the char-
acters, the setting and when the story takes place. The middle of
the summary should include an account problems the character
or characters encountered, obstacles that prevented the char
acter or characters had to overcome to try to find a solution to
their problem. The end of the summary should conclude with
the resolution to the character’s problem and identify theme or
the message that author is trying to convey through the charac-
                           ter.
