SURPASS
• Humphress Group created original version of library automation software.
• Surpass started in 1985 seeking a computer based card catalog, currently celebrating 30 years
• The original name was Melvil, and later founder Danny Humphress decided to change the
name to Surpass with the only objective of surpassing other systems that were available at
that time.
• It’s a strong product that built on input and feedback from many users worldwide.
• It has evolved and many new capabilities have been added to continue to evolve to meet the
needs of various types of libraries using the system.
• At one point it operated with DOS operating system and later it was ported to Windows.
• It instantly locates materials and access reviews written by other patrons
• Surpass also offers other software and hardware that easily integrate with the system.
• In addition, it is customized for use in small public, corporate libraries, and types of churches.
