Surya Namaskar is a salutation and worship of the sun through a series of 12 physical postures. It stretches the body and awakens the solar aspect within, releasing vital energy and developing higher awareness. Practiced in over 40 styles across India, it can be done dynamically with breath and movement like a dance. In Maharashtra, leaders like Shivaji Maharaj incorporated it for physical fitness and spiritual training of the body. It should be done relaxing into each pose with an easy flow, like dancing, at sunrise to receive solar radiation without strain.
