on County Property, which was published in the Washington post in December 2012, states that
Howard County supports NYC Health Commissioners soda ban and Howard County Executive
Ken Ulman moved to ban the sale of high-sugar drinks, such as sodas in their territory in order to
life expectancy of the countys population. The county sponsored an event supporting the nan of
high sugar drinks and there many delegations from many different organizations were in
attendance. The negative effect of high sugar content beverages, is the focus of this contentious
debate. The article concerns Howard countys decision that to restrict the sell high-sugar drinks
and their efforts to educate the community on healthy lifestyle.
The ban on sales and distribution of high sugary drink is looking to slows down
childrens weight gain. The concern of many health professionals regarding the deadly epidemic
of obesity associated with the consumption of sweet drinks. Todays children tend to gravitate
towards a high-calorie diet due to their lack of education on the subject. 63 year old Bette Biting,
who is a retired from Maryland state corrections system, said that when she was young she never
drunk soda and used ate fruits and vegetables instead. Todays children often go to vending
machines in their own schools to buy sodas, or sweet drinks. Betty supports Howard countys

officer Maura Rossman acknowledged that sugary drink consumption is unhealthy and advised
county residents to consider improving their health by addressing the causes of obesity. The
county has increased their health care plans for the uninsured residents and is now ranked the
healthiest county in Maryland. One of the steps take to become a healthy county was the
restriction on the sale of sweet drink in the county territory as well as reduction of calories.
Consideration of health issues on sweet drink, Howard county restricted sales and
distribution of sweet drinks in the county school zones, libraries and in a county events. County
removed a number of vending machines and 50 present of sweet drinks were removed from
vending machines. Restricting the sale of sweet drinks is a great action for the community people
and it is really helpful childrens health and their healthy choice. Today in America, every
restaurant, grocery store, school zone, vending machine sale a variety of different sweet drinks
and people like to drink them as usual. American Beverage Association vice president Ellen
Valentino said that American Beverage Association decreased beverage calories by 90 percent
and the industry has also put calories labels on each can pack and bottles. Also he stressed that
besides healthy eating or drinking is the important practice doing exercise and drinking in
moderation is important too. Kevin Rector mentioned that there are many counties including
Baltimore counties should consider that high sugar drink effect and populations health. The

drinks daily. Personally, I tasted American brand drink Coca Cola, when I was 19 years old and I
didnt liked because soda didnt quench my thirst due to the high level of sugar. American brand
sodas are all around the world and millions of people consume them daily. Many children gained
their weight and many adults and children suffer from obesity and other sugar related sickness..

health department and other health organization need to start educating parents and children

consider about Ken Ulmans order and they revised the school systems wellness policy in the
Howard county. Many companies, factories sale sweet drinks such as sodas and other sweet
beverage to make money, but they need to consider about public health. From county give a
requirements on sweetened beverage that sweetened beverage must have to have 5 calories per
serving, fruit juice must be 100 percent organic and 120 calories for 8 ounces serving. Some
young people dont accept the restriction on sweet drinks such as sodas because I is their habitual
method in acquiring energy and it seems like infringement on their rights on what to eat and
drink. Ken Ulman said that this is not forcing people what you eat or drink, County people are

Foundation set campaign that titled Howard County Unsweetened and through the campaign
they started to educate parents first for healthy beverage choice. They placed adds on the TV and
magazines advertising nutrition facts of sweet drinks. People who addicted soda and sweet
drinks have more risk for their health in their future. Healthy beverage and food choice and being
responsible for your own health is important to each individual and family. Many people
supports healthy beverage choices and support County Executive Ken Ulmans order to help
others healthy beverage choice and to be reduce obesity.
The New York city Board of Health voted on December 2012 to approve ban on the sale
large sodas and other sugary drinks on street restaurant and movie theaters, the first restriction of
its kind in the USA. Howard County became second place for the restriction on the sale of high
sugar drinks. Consumer group criticize soda ban as insult, but Health Board and other people
agree that cutting the intake of the sugary drinks could improve the health of the states children.
They concern about population health issue and epidemic obesity. Health Board pass the ban to
restrict for the sale sweet drink size and adding nutrition facts. As Kevin Rectors says should all
states restrict high sugar beverage and protect people health. There are many healthy choices for
the drink such as green tea, water, milk, and other organic juices. New York City and Howard
County are great models of healthy states. There are many health wellness programs, exercising,
weight loss programs offered in many school and health organizations. Gyms, schools, libraries
sell more water than sweet drinks. Healthy beverage and healthy life style create longer lives.
The restriction for the selling high sugary drinks makes an impact on the obesity epidemic,
diabetes and for other health issues. The Health Board considers the health issues clearly form

the determination to quit drinking soda drink and other sweet beverages,
