Tamil Brahmin wedding
 Tami Brahmins are the sub sect of south
Indian Brahmins also called as Iyer
wedding.
 Wedding ceremony is called as
kalyanam.
 The wedding lasts for two to three days.
 Traditionally the family of the bride is
responsible for organizing and planning the
wedding.

Vrutham
 The wedding rituals formally begin with
offering prayers to ancestors to seek their
and Gods blessings for upcoming wedding.
 For bridegroom, this signifies end of
Brahmachrya and initiation of
Gruhastha stage.
 The Palika Ceremony is practiced which
symbolises the showering of best wishes
for happy married life.

Nichayathartham- The
Engagement Ceremony
 The brides family welcomes the groom and
his family with love and gratitude.
 Both the family sit and prepare the lagna
patrika and is read aloud by the priest.
 Thamboolams and gifts are exchanged.
 Parupputhengai is important part of this
ceremony.

Kashi yatra
 In this ritual the groom is dressed in
traditional Panchakatcham veshti.
 As he sets of to renounce worldly persuit,
the brides father intervenes him and
explains importance of marriage. And
brings him back to mandapam.

Maalai Maatral
 It is exchange of garland between
bride and groom.
 It symbolises their unification as one
soul in two bodies.

 The couple is made to sit on the
Oonjal or swing which is rocked gently.
 This ritual signifies the couple must stay
strong together during the joys and
challenges of life, and also the support
of the family.

 It is fertility
rite. This
invokes the
blessing of
Astha
Dikpaalakas .
Kannika Dhanam -
Kanyaa Danam
 It doesn't mean donating a bride but it really
means taking or receiving or bringing a bride to
the grooms home after fulfilling all the rituals
with great respect and love.
 In kannika dhanam bride ,brides father and
groom perform the rituals with vedic mantras by
holy priest.
 The groom returns his assurance to the brides
father saying that he shall remain forever her
companion in joy and sorrow in this, life and life
after.

Kankana Dhaaranam
 Kankanam is a holy string fastened to a
piece of turmeric.
 The bride ties kankanam to wrist of the
groom. Then groom gets the rite to touch
her.
 Later groom ties kankanam to bride.

Mangalyadharanam
 The tying of the Mangal Sutra or tali takes
place by the groom to bride at exactly
pre- determined auspicious hour.
 Nadaswaram is played loud and fast to
avoid inauspicious sound at the critical
hour, it is called Getti Melam.
 The mangal sutra a turmeric thread with
three knots is tied around brides neck. The
knots symbolize Brahma, Vishnu and
Rudhra.

Saptapadhi
 The bride and groom take seven steps
around the fire.
 The beginning of each step he recites the
vedic mantra seeking blessing of Maha
Vishnu.
 Each step of saptapadhi symbolizes
blessing for food ,strength , piety,
progeny, wealth, comfort and health
respectively.

Pradhana Homam
 A crucial part of
wedding is the
homage paid by the
couple to Agni the
God of fire .
 The couple goes
around the fire. This
is known as Agni
Sakshi or witness by
fire.
Treading on the
Grindstone
 Holding the brides left
toe the bridegroom helps
her to tread on a
grindstone kept on the
right side of a fire.
 This ritual is symbolic of
the solid rock foundation
for the union.

 The groom puts Mettis a silver ring to the
brides toes.
 The couple is then shown Dhruva Nakshatra
and Arundhati Nakshatra which symbolizes
the immortality through single minded
devotion and perseverance and embodiment
of charity and virtue respectively.

 The Nalangu starts with the bride and
bridegroom being seated opposite each
other.
 They apply turmeric on each others feet.
The bride also takes yellow rice and waves
it around her husbands head and throws it
away.
 This is followed by wedding games that
bring in a light-hearted element into the
wedding day and relieve the stress.

1. Laaja homam
 Comprises the brides own offering into
the sacrificial fire.
 Food offering, the bride seeks a long life
for her husband and for propagation of
her family.
 Participation of the brides brother
indicates the continuance of links
between the two families even after
marriage.

2. Jayadhi Homam
 This is performed to propitiate the
Gandharvas and other deities.
 The benefits of doing this are that they
increase knowledge and Brahminical
sathvic qualities.
 This is followed by another three prayers
called Vyahrithi homam, Swishtakrith
homam and Prajapathi homam.

3. Pravesa Homam
 This is done to solemnize the brides entry into the
husbands home.
 Signifies that through her, new lives would be
brought forth into this world.
4. Sesha Homam
 Sesha means leftover.
 Fire oblation with the residual ghee, a little of
which is sprinkled on the brides head four times.
 The idea of sprinkling this residual ghee on the
brides head signifies strength to be drawn from
the four Vedas; which is left over from one Yuga or
era to another.

1. Mangala Arathi
 A solution of lime and turmeric powder is
prepared on a plate, circled around
before the couple and thrown away to
ward off evil.
2. Shanthi Muhurtham
 Two souls united in a sacred act of
fulfillment, to bring forth progeny as
nature's be.

 Photos may be taken with the newly weds
with the backdrop of classical music.

 One of the unique features of a Tamil
wedding is the use of red and saffron
colors to empower richness in the d辿cor
