During the life of a structure impact by foreign objects can be expected to occur during manufacturing, service and maintenance operations. An example of in service impact occurs during aircrafts takeoffs and landing. During the manufacturing process or during maintenance tools can be dropped on the structure, in this case the impact energy is small, laminated structures are more susceptible to impact damage often cannot be detected by visual inspection. This internal damage can severe reductions in strength and further reductions occur under the load. Therefore the effects of foreign object impact on composite structure must be understood and proper measures should be taken in the design process to account for expected events. Concerns about the effects of impact on the performance of composite structures have been a factor in limiting the use of composite materials. For these reasons the problem of impact has received considerable attention in the literature. The process of impact damage initiation and growth, and identify the governing parameters are important for the formulation of numerical models for damage prediction, for designing impact resistant structures and for developing improved material systems. An important aspect of a model for predicting the impact dynamics is to accurately describe the behavior of the target under impact loading conditions. For some simple cases the structural loading can be modeled by a simple spring-mass system or by using the quasi-static behavior and considering the energy balance for a system. We have investigated the hardening response, residual stress generation and microstructural changes in aluminium alloy 2624 owing to laser shock peening. The alloy was studied in two heat treatment conditions, T351 and T39, that have 20% difference in yield strength: hence the effects of laser power density and multiple peen impacts on materials with nominally identical physical properties but with different hardening responses has been studied. Hardness was characterised by nanoindentation, and residual stresses were measured by incremental hole drilling.
The magnitude and the depth of the peak compressive residual stresses increase with increasing power densities as well as the number of laser impacts, before reaching a saturation point above which loss of surface compression occurs. Maximum compressive residual stresses were around 350MPa, and maximum hardness increase was around 22%. A modified couple stress theory is utilized to model the micro-plate, considering the variable material length-scale parameter. The nonlinear governing equation of motion for static analysis is solved using the step-by-step linearization method (SSLM) and the static pull-in parameters, limiting the stable regions of capacitive resonators, are determined and compared to those obtained by the classical theory. The numerical results reveal that the intrinsic size dependence of materials leads to an increase in the pull-in voltage and natural frequency depending on the thickness of the micro-plate. - 2. Problem Description: Consider a Composite Lamina as shown in figure. Which is having Youngs Modulus 14000 N/2 and Poissons Ratio 0.2. Find the Max. Stress and Strain values and also plot the Stress-Strain Graph.
- 4. Type of Analysis : Static, General
- 5. Element Type: 8-node Linear brick element (C3D8R)
- 6. The C3D8R element is a general purpose linear brick element, with reduced integration (1 integration point). Due to the reduced integration, the locking phenomena observed in the C3D8 element do not show. The element tends to be not stiff enough in bending. Stresses, strains are most accurate in the integration points. The integration point of the C3D8R element is located in the middle of the element. Small elements are required to capture a stress concentration at the boundary of a structure. Fig. 1x1x1 integration point scheme in hexahedral elements
