The document provides information about dangerous animals found in Australia, including saltwater crocodiles, freshwater crocodiles, sharks, snakes, spiders, stonefish, Portuguese man o' wars, and platypuses. Saltwater crocodiles can grow over 8 meters long and weigh over 1 ton, have the strongest bite of any animal, and can live up to 100 years. Sharks have caused 216 fatal attacks in Australia since 1791. Several highly venomous spiders are found in Australia, including the Sydney funnel-web spider and redback spider, with the former's bite previously causing deaths until an antivenom was developed in the 1980s.
The document provides instructions for students to become certified snake safety investigators. They will investigate snake facts, design models of snakes and their habitats, produce the models, create an informational poster, and evaluate their work. The goal is for students to learn about snake safety so they are prepared for encounters with snakes over the summer.
Once you look all around you, you realize that all living creatures are miracles of nature. Our world is full of real wonders which make it incredible if you are willing to view it that way. However, sadly enough, most people’s outlook on life is to take everything around them for granted or with despair.
Snake bites are a serious health issue in India, resulting in over 46,000 deaths per year. The document provides guidance on first aid for snake bites, including what to do (keep the victim calm, immobilize the bitten limb, quickly transport to the hospital) and what not to do (suck out venom, apply tourniquets, try to catch the snake). It also identifies the four most medically important venomous snakes in India - the "Big 4" - and emphasizes the importance of prevention through education and being vigilant about snakes.

This document provides an introduction to snakes and summarizes common myths and facts about snakes. It begins with an acknowledgement and preface thanking those who provided assistance. It then provides classifications of snakes based on venom, including non-venomous, semi-venomous, and venomous snakes. Examples are given for each classification. The document discusses the importance of snakes in controlling pest populations. It then summarizes several common myths about snakes, such as all snakes being venomous, snakes drinking milk, and snakes being attracted to music or whistling, and provides facts to dispel these myths.
The document discusses how freshwater invertebrates, specifically mollusks or snails, make up a significant portion of Alabama's biodiversity as there are 180 mollusk species in the state, and notes that pollution of freshwater habitats could negatively impact these species by threatening the aquatic ecosystems they depend on for survival. It also provides context that mollusks are commonly found in aquatic environments throughout North America.
This document is an interactive presentation about classifying animals into vertebrates and invertebrates. It begins with an introduction and objectives. It then discusses vertebrates, defining them as animals with backbones, and categorizing them into classes such as fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Each class is then further described. The document also covers invertebrates, which do not have backbones, categorizing them into phyla such as sponges, worms, arthropods, mollusks, and echinoderms. Specific examples are provided for each category along with distinguishing features.
This document provides an overview of amphibians including their characteristics, evolution, examples of different types of amphibians like frogs, salamanders, and caecilians. It discusses their anatomy, life cycles, habitats, defenses, diets, and more. Amphibians are defined as animals that develop outside the body, have glandular skin without scales, and can breathe through gills or lungs. They first appeared around 340-270 million years ago.
This document provides information about rattlesnakes, including that they average 2 feet in length, bear live young in the fall, and strike in defense or when sensing heat and movement. It notes that most rattlesnake bites occur when they are teased or handled, that the majority of bites are below the knee, and that 50% result in a "dry bite" meant to scare the threat away rather than envenomate. Safety tips are given such as slowly backing away if encountering a rattlesnake and seeking immediate medical care for any bite.
- The author went scuba diving and observed octopuses in their natural habitat, which fascinated them and prompted an assignment on the morality of consuming octopuses.
- Through their observations, the author realized octopuses have highly intelligent and complex capabilities, contrary to common misconceptions that view them as unintelligent or harmless.
- The author has shifted their view to supporting octopuses due to their intelligence and sentience, rather than viewing them as mere food.
The document discusses animal experiences and contains a competition with questions about different animals such as a kangaroo, horse, zebra, sloth, and dolphin. It also includes photos comparing wild animals at the circus and zoo and domestic animals as pets or working animals to analyze which animals seem to have better lives or are more important to people.
Sea turtles
It is difficult to find the exact population numbers for sea turtles because male and young sea turtles do not return to shore once they hatch and reach the ocean, which makes it hard to keep track of them. However, all around the world countries have set up turtle sanctuaries. Take the Maldives, five of the seven species of sea turtles can be with the two most common being the Hawksbill and the Green Leatherback.

We live in a world that's always on. Our phones buzz, emails pile up, and to-do lists never end. It's hard to find a quiet moment, let alone come up with fresh ideas. But here's the thing - creativity isn't a luxury. It's how we solve problems, innovate, and move forward. Without it, we're just running in place.
This constant noise in our lives makes it tough to think clearly. We're always reacting, never reflecting. And when we do try to be creative, our minds feel cluttered. It's like trying to paint in a room full of people shouting at you.

1. Tentacles, Barbs, and Fangs, Oh My! This WebQuest will develop important survival skills necessary to coexist with the deadly wildlife unique to Australia.
2. Introduction Your flight landed in Sydney only minutes ago and the excitement is still building.Ìý You have come to Australia to volunteer with an environmental and native Australian wildlife conservation group. Welcomed with open arms from the friendly Aussies, they lead you from your terminal to sit and discuss with you the agenda for your shared three week excursion.Ìý As you are reading through the schedule, you notice the sundry habitats you will explore.Ìý You will be traveling in and exploring the deserts, the eucalyptus forests, and oceans Australia has to offer, not to mention the steel jungles you are free to visit in your down time. You are excited to get going, and as you head for the exit, a kind smile stops you in your tracks.
3. G’day Mate!Ìý Welcome to Sydney and thanks for your interest in our project, we’re all happy to have ya!Ìý We understand your eagerness to see the sights, but before we can bring you into the outback, or even out of the airport for that matter, you need to learn about what you're up against in this non-forgiving land. You need to understand the diversity of wildlife here in Australia. Ìý We have many of the same animals that you do back in the states, but we also have wildlife you've probably never dreamed of, and some of them are plainly put, deadly.Ìý Growing up here, we all had to learn to adapt to our environment and the ever constant possibility of being struck, stung, or bitten. Ìý To prove your proficiency you will take a quiz which will cover information like where these creatures are located in Australia, how to identify and avoid them, and what first aid techniques are most effective against these species in the case of an emergency situation.
4. Task Before you begin, watch this video which contains most of the animals you will be learning about. Beware though, that the depiction of the cone snail and taipan snake are not accurate. Come to Australia! You will be researching the following animals: Cone Snail, Box Jellyfish, Irukandji, Funnelweb, Redback, Blue Ringed Octopus, Brown Snake, Taipan, Stonefish, Saltwater Crocodile.
5. Process Here are some websites to help you begin your search and fill out your chart. Aussie Wildlife Aussie Spiders Aussie Snakes Box Jellyfish Saltwater Crocodile First Aid Click here for the chart to fill out
6. Hint By the way, there is little to no information regarding first aid of crocodile encounters, so focus mainly on preventative measures, and keeping out of known dangerous crocodile areas. Study Guide
8. Evaluation 25% Understands why pressure immobilization bandages are so important to saving tissue and bodily function. Given a choice of options in a real world scenario can choose the least likely to result in attack. Knows to encourage the victim to stay calm and remain in one place until help arrives. Knows to delegate different people to different jobs in the case of an emergency. (You, go call 911!) Critical Thinking 25% Knows for which of the ten animals assigned if anti-venom is available. Understands when to use a pressure immobilization bandage, and when to use warm water. Knows which jellyfish vinegar is effective against. Understands to treat all snake bites the same, sea or land, expected venomous or not. First Aid 25% Can give examples of how to avoid 10 out of the 10 animals tested upon. Can give ways to avoid 7 out of the 10 animals tested upon. Understands the need to be aware of their surroundings and can give 5 examples of how to prevent negative encounters with Australia's venomous. Understands that awareness is important but cannot give examples. Preventing Negative Encounters 25% Can correctly identify 9 of the 10 assigned animals and the habitat in which you would find them. Can correctly identify 7 of the 10 assigned animals and most of their habitats. Can correctly identify 4 of the 10 assigned animals. Can correctly identify 2 of the 10 assigned animals. Identifying Australian Wildlife Score Exemplary 25 Very Good 20 Developing 15 Beginning 10 Category
9. Conclusion Congratulations!Ìý You are now considered experienced enough in the dangerous reality of natural Australia to join the expedition and be a contributing member of the group.Ìý In case of an emergency, you'll know what to do, and if we have a question about a jellyfish in the water, you will be able to tell us if we should fear for our lives.Ìý Most of our deadly animals are not aggressive, and the majority of the time when they realize they are near you, they just want to get away, but either way, you will know how to react if you come face-to-face with a taipan, and this is what we hoped to prepare you for.Ìý Again, great job and welcome to the team!
