This study examined the impact of agricultural activities on groundwater quality and potential human health effects in karstic aquifers in the Vratza region of Bulgaria. Water samples from wells, springs and taps in endemic and non-endemic villages for Balkan endemic nephropathy were analyzed. Results showed elevated levels of nitrates, phosphates, boron and uranium in areas with more intensive agriculture, indicating an influence on water chemistry. Factor and correlation analyses provided evidence that magnesium and uranium concentrations were associated with human activities like fertilizer use. The decoupling of calcium and bicarbonate concentrations from mineral equilibrium also suggested agricultural impacts were altering groundwater geochemistry in ways that could increase health risks through exposure to compoundsEID2 Database: New Tools for One Health Research and Policy Development
