Megan Norton gives the commencement speech to the graduating class of 2016 at the School of International Service at American University. She reflects on her own experience of living in 9 countries and moving 17 times, which caused her to feel displaced and unsure of her own identity. At SIS, she found a community that embraced cultural complexity and fluid identities. Through her work facilitating intercultural dialogues, she witnessed both tensions around religious differences but also students choosing understanding over simplification. She encourages the graduates to take the lessons of cultural curiosity and breaking down barriers of fear or resistance with them as they leave SIS.

John Woolman was a 18th century Quaker born in New Jersey who advocated for social reform, especially abolitionism. He struggled with contradictions between Quaker values and practices involving slavery. Through prayer, meditation and journaling, Woolman sought to harmonize his inward and outward life. He worked to end oppression through personal choices, conversations and ministry. Woolman's legacy includes promoting nonviolence, sustainability, and starting reform from within the self and community through respectful action. His influence continues through his emphasis on experiencing and understanding others' conditions in order to work for justice.

Teaching from selfhoodValdosta State University

In this essay, I reflexively narrate my personal travails as a Teaching Associate (TA) in a Midwestern US university and, later, an Assistant Professor in the Southern State of Georgia. I argue that, as a foreign-born TA and, later, an Assistant Professor, I carry extra layers of identity markers that distinguish me from the homegrown professor. Thus, the masked and the overt demands by the hegemonic institutional forces for conformity to the Anglo-American speech forms and narratives suppress those unique identity markers. So as not to create tension and friction in the classroom, it is challenging not to be seduced to veil those unique identity markers in the cross-cultural intersections of pedagogy. However, unlike the homegrown professor on familiar terrains, by concealing those unique identity markers about myself, my true self is veiled from students and I become a mystery to them in the ensuing pedagogical encounter. With this understanding, I have always positioned my true self as rhetorical act of anchoring that demystifies the strange and invites the native to the never-ending dialogue of discovery.

My attempt to explain how the metaphysics of the universe works using speculative philosophy and physics. I use the philosophy of idealism, consciousness primary, along with support from modern physicists who support this argument. I propose that the basis of the universe is non-dual monistic idealism. Using the Buddhist metaphysics of an unconditioned basis of being (“infinite” space-time & potential) we see how monistic idealism plays out in the non-random rules, structure, and repeating patterns of a manifested & conditioned universe. I also propose that the unconditioned basis-of-being is the G?del "X" (unrecognized complexity) factor that explains the existence of the manifested conditioned universe per his ontological proof. Idealism can also explain the structural theodicy and suffering of the manifested universe, it is not a problem of “evil” but of ruthlessness for a purpose. Idealism also refutes a personal “conditioned” theistic God as Absolute or Ultimate, but does not refute (allows) spiritual power and meaning in the world. I include my Neoplatonic-like cosmological proof of “God” as the unconditioned basis of being, a terminal ontological “ground-state” (as “brute fact”), as being a non-theistic source of the universe.
