The Discrete-Point Approach:
This approach is based on the idea that language can be
broken down into discrete components, such as grammar
rules or vocabulary items.
Assessments typically consist of multiple-choice
questions or fill-in-the-blanks that test specific grammatical
points.
It aims for high reliability by testing a large number of
items, but each item assesses only one aspect of language.
Critics argue that it doesnt reflect the integrative
nature of language use and may not measure communicative
competence effectively
1.The Discrete-Point Approach:
1.Item 1: Choose the correct form of the
verb to complete the sentence: She
(go, goes, went) to the store every
Sunday.
2. Item 2: Fill in the blank with the
correct preposition: He is good ___
playing soccer. (at, in, on)
2. The Performance-Assessment Approach
1.Performance assessment evaluates a learners ability to use
language in context, rather than just their knowledge of
grammatical rules.
2.It involves tasks that require learners to produce language,
such as writing an essay or participating in a conversation.
3.This approach is considered more holistic, as it assesses the
ability to apply grammar in real-life situations.
4.It can provide a more accurate picture of a learners
communicative abilities but may be more challenging to
administer and score.
Examples:
The Performance-Assessment Approach:
Item 1: Write a short essay about your last vacation
using past tense verbs.
Item 2: Participate in a role-play where you have to
make future plans with a partner using will and
going to.
3. The Second Language (L2) Production Features Approach:
This approach focuses on the naturalistic language
production of learners.
It involves analyzing the features of language that
learners produce during real-life interactions
The goal is to understand the grammatical resources that
learners have acquired and how they use them in
communication
Its beneficial for understanding the developmental stages
of language acquisition and the effectiveness of grammar
instruction
Example: The Second Language (L2) Production
Features Approach
Item 1: Record a conversation with a classmate
about your daily routine. The assessment will
focus on the use of present simple tense.
Item 2: Describe your favorite movie in a short
presentation. Attention will be paid to adjective
order and usage.
4. The Developmental Approach to Grammar Assessment
The developmental approach takes into account the stages
of language development that learners go through
It assesses learners grammatical ability based on their
current stage and tracks their progress over time.
This approach is aligned with the concept of interlanguage,
where learners language ability is seen as constantly
evolving.
It can be particularly useful for formative assessment,
providing feedback that helps learners move to the next
stage of language development
Example: The Developmental Approach to
Grammar Assessment
Item 1: Identify and correct the errors in the
following sentence:
She dont like the chocolate.
Item 2: Arrange the jumbled words to form a
coherent sentence:
is / the / cat / under / sleeping / the / table.
