Young people used BlackBerry messaging services like BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) to organize riots in London from August 6-10, 2011. BBM allowed for easy and anonymous communication that helped spread news and plans for rioting. The UK government called for shutting down BBM, but BlackBerry objected that they were not responsible for the riots. Over 5,100 people were ultimately arrested in connection with the riots.
