The Civil War had a significant impact on Rockland County, New York. The county's population had doubled to 22,492 by 1860. Several Rockland County companies served, including units from Nyack, Stony Point, Haverstraw, Ramapo, and Clarkstown. Brothers from one family all served in the 17th New York Infantry. The county also saw recruiting of Irish immigrants and Germans led by General Louis Blenker. The draft impacted Rockland County as well. Sites like Mount Moor Cemetery honor those who fought from the area.

- #17: Each Congressional District was required to fill a quota of soldiers. In turn the quote within the district was divided into a quota per town. In Rockland County the towns taxed eligible men $25 to help pay for exemptions and to meet the town quotas. The Copperheads as the Peace Democrats came to be known formed The Society for the Diffusion of Correct Political Knowledge. 油In the wake of the draft riots in New York a drunken group of these men visited the homes of Union men yelling Hurrah for Jeff.
