The document discusses the different layers of the web, including the surface web, deep web, and dark web. The dark web is a small portion of the deep web that can only be accessed through specialized browsers like TOR that aim to conceal users' identities and locations. The dark web is known as a place for illegal activities like drug trafficking and weapons sales, and uses bitcoin as its currency to facilitate anonymous transactions.

4. The Dark Web
- Websites in the Dark Web are intentionally hidden
and can only be accessed through a special web
browser such as the TOR (The Onion Router) browser
- It is known to be a haven for illegal or illicit
activities/transactions: drug dealing, gun/arms
trading, buying identities, and insider trading to
name a few
- Uses Bitcoins as the currency
5. Deeper into the Dark Web
The Onion Router browser
This browser has multiple layers, hence the name onion, for
security purposes. The different layers mask the IP addresses
of those who are accessing the sites within the Dark Web.
This makes tracing the users practically impossible
Bitcoins
- Digital currency created by Satoshi Nakamoto (an alias) in
2009
- There are no middlemen, such as bank institutions, which
mean that the transaction fees are lower
- The sender nor the receiver of the Bitcoin cant be traced
which makes it the perfect currency for the Dark Web
- The transactions are logged in a public ledger using the
wallet IDs of the users, not their names
