Chapter :- The Earth in the Solar System
Geography Geo {ge) Graphy {Graphia}
WritingEarth
Geo (ge)
Logy (logia)
Metry (metria)
Oid (oeides)
Study of the earth
Measurement of the Earth
Resembling the shape or
form of the earth
Study the Celestial bodies and their movement are called astronomers
Stars
Stars :- all stars appear twinkling but some of them not twinkling as other do. They
simply glow without any flicker just as moon shine
MOON
Along with the twinkling object, we all also see the moon most of days.
It may appear different shapes and at different position,
Note :- The Sun, the moon and all those objects shining in the night sky are called Celestial bodies
 Some are very big
 Made up of gases
Own heat and light which they emit in large
amounts .
These celestial bodies are called stars
We can see the full moon only once in about a month time . It is full moon night or Poornima.
fortnight later we can not see it at all it is new moon night or Amavasya
The Moon that we see in the sky is a satellite. It is Companion of our earth and moves around it.
constellations
Various patterns formed by different groups of stars, these are called constellation.
Ursa Major or Big Bear is one such constellation
One of the most easily recognizable constellation is the Saptarishi. It is a group of 7 Stars that form a part of
Ursa Major constellation.
North Star :- The North star indicates the north direction it is also called north star or pole star
Note:- Some celestial bodies dont have their own heat and light. They light by the light of stars such
bodies are called plants
Planet Greek word Planetai Wonderes
Facts :- Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus have ring around them. These are belts of small debris
The Solar System
The Sun, Eight planets, Satellites and some other celestial bodies Known as asteroids and meteoroids from
the solar system.
The Sun
 Centre of the solar system
Huge and made up of extremely hot gases
It provide the pulling force that binds the solar systems
 Closest star to the Sun
150 million km away from the earth
Closest Star to the sun :- Proxima Centauri (About
4.22 light year away)
Light Year
Distance that light travel in a year is called Light Year
 Speed of light :- 300,000KM/Sec or 3*10^8 m/sec
 1 light year :- 9.5*10^15m
Composition of Sun is
 About 71% = Hydrogen
 28%= Helium
 1%= Other Gases
Planets
There are Eight Planets in our solar system
All the Eight planets of the solar system moves around the sun in fixed path
Venus is considered as eaths-twin
because it size and shape are very much
similar to the earth
The Earth
Third nearest planet to the sun
In size it is fifth largest planet
It is slightly flattened at the poles
It shape is described as a groid, Geoid means shape like earth
It appears blue from the outer space, because of two thirds
surface is covered with water ,Also known as blue planet
The MOON
 Moon is satellite for earth
It is diameter only one-quarter of earth
3,84,400 km away from the earth
The moon moves around the earth in about 27 days.
It take exactly same time to complete one spin
Asteroids
These are tiny bodies which also moves around the sun, these
bodies are called asteroids.
These are found b/w the orbit of mars and Jupiter
Meteoroids
The small piece of rocks which moves around the sun are
called meteoroids
Comets
A comet is an icy, small Solar System body that, when passing close to the Sun, warms and begins to release
gases, a process called outgassing. This produces a visible atmosphere or coma, and sometimes also a tail.
Neil Armstrong was the first man to step on the surface of the moon on 21 July 1969
