French education is free and compulsory between ages 6-16. Children typically begin schooling at age 3 in preparatory programs, then enter primary school at age 6 for 5 years of general education. After primary school, students are around 11-12 and take the DNB exam, then have the option to pursue vocational training, general high school, or apprenticeships over the next few years as they work towards a Baccalaureate degree and potential higher education opportunities.
