STORY IS ABOUT…
• Cappy Ricks, an old lumber company founder
The company was not doing good and Mr. Ricks was
looking for a new manager for the Shanghai office.
• William E. Peck, a young World War I veteran
Mr. Peck, physically disabled, walks with a slight limp
and his left forearm had been amputated half way
to the elbow.
PERSEVERANCE
• Mr. Peck looking for a job had interviewed Mr.
Skinner, President of Ricks Logging and Lumbering
Company and Matt Peasley, President of Blue Start
Navigation company, but unable to get Job.
(both the company are corporate entity representing Mr. Ricks interest
in wholesale lumber and shipping circle respectively)
• Mr. Peck after not getting the job from heads went
to Mr. Ricks and wanted him to go over them to
give him a job. And he did get the job.
CONFIDENCE
Mr. Peck was so confident of getting the job at Ricks
Lumber & Logging Company that he already had
got printed the engraved business card a week
before.
GOAL ACHIEVER
• Mr. Peck started from the bottom. He was asked to
sell skunk spruce of California, which has enough
stock with a very little demand.
• Within two months, Mr. Peck demonstrated his
selling ability by selling at much faster pace. He was
then asked to devote his talent to the disposal of
celdar shigles and siding, Dougals fir and redwood
also.
DEGREE OF THE BLUE VASE
• To select Mr. Peck as the Manager for Sanghai
office, he had to the pass the Blue vase test of Mr.
Ricks
• Mr. Ricks expresses his desire to Mr. Peck of getting
the Blue Vase which he saw through a window of
some art store on Sutter Street. It was a Sunday
afternoon and Mr. Peck was asked to deliver the
Vase by the night.
PERSEVERANCE - OBSTACLES FACED
• Finding that store was bit difficult and took a lot of
efforts for finding it
• Finally after finding the shop, finding the contact
number of shop owner was difficult as the name of
shop was misspelled
• After making calls to different people with the same
name, he finally found the person he sought
• The owner was dining with friends and was least
bothered to leave. Although he asked to contact
head Salesman to help him.
• Head salesman was not at home and dining at
some country club
PERSEVERANCE - OBSTACLES FACED
CONTD…
• Mr. Peck had called at all the nearby county clubs but
unable to get in touch with head salesman.
• After a while, he called again and discovered that the
sales person had returned back to his home.
• Salesman after confirming the authenticity by calling the
store owner appeared on shop at nine-fifteen.
• Salesman demanded for two-thousand dollar in cash for
selling that Vase.
• Mr. Peck tried to get this huge sum of money from many
places but failed. He finally brought his platinum ring set
worth twenty thousand dollars as a security for the
payment of check.
THE GO-GETTER
It was much easier and convenient to say that it was
not possible to get the vase for many. It was much
easier to make a report on the many obstacles or
excuses on why he was not able to get the blue
vase. It is those rare individuals who accomplish the
task with positive attitude & perseverance, who
become the go-getter.
Mr. Pecks brigade motto:
IT SHALL BE DONE
Thank you!!
