Editor's Notes

  • #2: Create video clip:Hi, my name is Connie Neal, but you can call me Nealy If youre watching this , you already know me because I only invited kids from our previous youth group to be part to this pilot project I also invited parents and a few of our former leaders. Thanks for your help as we try to start doing youth ministry in a new way. Im really excited about the possibilities and I want to have your input. So let me know what you think. When you complete each slide in this presentation, click to proceed to the next. If you miss something, feel free to go back. So without further delay, lets get started. Click away!
  • #3: This is a screen shot of the opening page of our new Digital Youth Ministry campus. Theres a separate presentation that explains how to get around and communicate on campus. Her I just wanted to give you a peek at where we will start meeting in cyberspace and show you some of the highlights.
  • #4: Whenever you start a puzzle its best to see the picture on the lid before you start piecing it together. When you play a game, you need to know what the goal is, how to play and how to win. Whenever you start something new, you need to know the goal. In basketball, the goal is to get the ball through the hoop. Imagine watching or playing a basketball game without a basket. So, as we start this new digital youth ministry, we need to focus on our goal.
  • #5: In basketball, the goal is to get the ball through the hoop more times than your opponent. In this youth ministry, our goals need to be clear when we start too.
  • #6: I take our goal from the Bible. Its in the letter the Apostle Paul wrote to his young friend Timothy, whom he was mentoringPaul was an Apostle which means one who is sent out by God. The Apostle Paul was used by God to write most of the New Testament of the Bible. Timothy was a young man who was learning about the Lord from Paul. Two books of the Bible are letters written to Timothy from Paul.
  • #7: Our goal relates to real life and how we live it: to have more love in our lives, to have a good conscience, and a sincere faith in God. This first class will last four weeks: Those four weeks will help us make Gods goals for us into our goals as well. We will see how these three things will bless our lives and make us a powerful and positive influence in our world. This lesson is a brief overview. See if you can remember all three before the end of the lesson.
  • #8: Do you know anybody who doesnt want and need LOVE? The ultimate goal of learning the Bible is to have more love in our lives: knowing Gods love for us, loving God back, and loving others as we love ourselves. The word PURE as it is used in this verse -- means to be cleansed, taking something that is soiled and make it completely clean. No one, except God, starts out pure and holy. Every one of us, every human being is inclined to think bad things, make wrong choices and to sin which means to fall short of what God wants for us. The word HEART means the source of your life. It includes your emotions, your reason or what you think, and your will or what you choose. In lesson two of this four week study we will learn more about finding love from a pure heart.
  • #9: Everyone is born with a conscience. Thats the part of you that helps you figure out what is right and what is wrong. Here Homer Simpson is trying to make a decision between good and evil. His conscience is pictured by a little angel (that looks a lot like him) trying to influence him to do good on one shoulder and a little devil on the other shoulder (that also looks like him) trying to persuade him to make a wrong choice. Everyone has a conscience. But, the way we respond to our conscience can make it good -- so it works like it should and helps us experience the best in life or disable it so that it no longer works properly to help us avoid the dangers and bad consequences of evil. Much of our Bible study will help us develop a good conscience. This should be one of our goals. We will learn about getting and keeping a good conscience in week three of this four week course.
  • #10: The word SINCERE means that you are not faking it. Its the opposite of playing a part on a stage and just saying what the script tells you to say. God wants our faith to the real thing, not just an act we put on. Thats what sincere means. Some people know how to play the part of a Christian without really believing Gods Word or even knowing what it says. Do you know anyone who says the right Christian words and acts the part especially in front of their parents or at church but seems to be faking it? God wants our faith to be sincere, not an act.The word FAITH means a belief or trust that is strong enough to cause us act on it. The Bible says to put our faith in God. Heres an example: This red object in the picture is a chair even though it doesnt have four legs it will hold an adult who sits in it. If you believed me and trusted my word enough to actually sit in this chair, that would be an act of faith. In the last week of our four week course, we will look at how we can have a sincere faith in God through believing in Jesus Christ.
  • #11: See if you can remember our three goals found in 1 Timothy 1:5 we should aim for whenever we study the Bible.Think of the first one to yourself, then click to see it appear. Think of the second goal. Can you remember it if you think of Homer Simpson? Click to see our second goal. Think of our final goal to aim for while studying the Bible. Click to see it appear. How did you do at remembering all three? After we go through this four week course of study you should be able to recall these, not just because you memorized them, but because each one will become an important and meaningful part of your spiritual growth.
  • #12: These five things would be part of excelling at any game. Even the best basketball playing in the world had to start by learning and practicing the basics to be able to help get that ball through the hoop. This is also true in our study of the Bible and learning to reach the goals God sets for us. Its a process that takes time, there are skills to be learned. The skills we need to develop dont magically appear. We learn; we try; we miss and get correction to help us do better. We practice some more. And we dont do it alone, what fun is that? We become part of a team and we have the help, guidance, encouragement, and motivation of a coach. In any sport, the more you play the game and practice your skills, the better you become at helping your team reach your goals and win.
  • #13: As we study the Bible, our aim is to have love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. But we dont have those magically appear. Rather, our experience of these important parts of life develop in much the same way a basketball player becomes good at playing the game. Lets look at the five things that are similar.
  • #14: To learn the Bible you need someone to share Gods word with you and teach you what it means and how it applies to your life. Im here to be your teacher, but you cannot learn unless YOU participate. You play a major role. In our Digital Youth Ministry here are the basics expected of participants each week of this four week course:View the brief presentationRespond to one or two discussion questionsRespond to at least two other classmates discussion commentsIf you have any questions about things in the lesson that are not clear, ask Nealy so she can answer? There will be other options available for those who want more, but the things I just listed are the basics. Will you join us?
  • #15: Playing any game well takes practice. The more you play the game and practice your skills, the better you become at reaching the goal and helping your team win. Every lesson in our Bible study will give you opportunities to put what you are learning into practice in your daily life. But no one can practice it for you.So after each lesson, dare to try to live out what we have learned. Even if you dont do it perfectly, thats okay. God will pick you up, and help you try again. Thats what practice is all about. Will you be willing to practice applying Gods word in your life after each lesson, even if it is only in a small way?
  • #16: One of the things a good coach will do after each game is to encourage the team but also to give correction on how the player can make corrections to improve their game. Sometimes when we study the Bible, we will see a gap between the best performance God wants and the way we are living our lives. These are times when we need to take correction; determine to stop doing the things that are not in keeping with Gods playbook and focus on practicing making a specific correction. Will you be willing to take correction from God when you see it or hear it from the Bible?
  • #17: Some eLearning is lonely and boring. I want nothing to do with that kind of experience. I have been going to college online for three years. I have discovered that what makes it so cool is the way I have connected with my fellow learners even though we have never met in person and live all over the world. The way we keep this Digital Youth Ministry from being lonely and boring is to interact with each other. We can do this in the courseroom where only those in our class (and invited guests) can see or hear what we are saying. Discussing the lessons, answering the discussion questions and responding to what others discuss keeps us connected with each other and with what we are learning. We may also meet together in person for special events or face to face meetings that go along with our online course. Taking these lessons alone would be like shooting hoops by yourself when a team wants you to play with them. Will you connect with your fellow learners in this class?
  • #18: The other thing I really like about my online learning experience in college is that I have support people who are there to help me. In this Digital Youth Ministry, I am here for you. You can reach me in the courseroom where whatever I teach you can help others also, especially those too shy to ask. You can also reach me by phone if you need to talk. In addition to having me as your teacher, we hope to have a small group leader who can get to know you, pray for you, and help you think through what we are learning and how to apply it to your life. You will get to choose your small group leader or choose to change if you like.Your small group leader is there to help when Im not available and will respond to all your prayer requests and discussion posts. Will you rely on your small group leader to help you in this course?
  • #19: So, thats our first lesson. Can you remember the three things we aim for as our goal in studying the Bible? IF not, the nifty thing about this presentation is that you can go back over it if you want. I want to know your feedback. Im learning as we go along too and I need your help so I can make corrections and get better as we go along. Did I talk too much? Was it boring? Were the graphics hokey? Did you notice that I learned to animate text? Matt Gong encouraged me to learn that. Thanks, Matt!Anyway, I am SO EXCITED to be doing this with you. This is what the Lord is leading me to learn to do and I could not do it without your help. Oh, yeah, one more thing. I really love you guys! See, Im reaching those goals already. Bye!
