The author composed an acoustic rock opera in the 1990s inspired by Confederate colonel John Mosby called "The Grey Ghost". It premiered in 1990 to sold out crowds and positive media coverage. The opera was then performed at various venues across the mid-Atlantic. Plans for a Soviet tour were cancelled due to the collapse of the USSR. Twenty-five years later, the author is seeking crowd funding to bring the opera back for anniversary concerts, feeling inspired by musicians who continued performing songs from it over the years.

Over twenty years ago I spent three years
researching the exploits of Col. John Mosby,
The Grey Ghost, in and around an area of
Virginia known as the Debatable Land.
After three years of research, I spent another
two years composing an acoustic rock opera
which premiered on January 20, 1990 at the
Gay Street Theatre in Washington, Va.
The sold out premiere concert was followed with a series of concerts at
performance venues and college campuses across Virginia and the
mid-Atlantic throughout 1990.

The premiere concert was covered by northern Virginia media and PBS
… which accounted for the overflow crowd at the concert.
Following the premiere concert, segments of the video and audio tracks
played on PBS and WAMU (American University) radio.

In the Fall of 1990, I was invited to join a
group of well-known musicians and
bands for a tour of the Soviet Union.
It was planned that this would be a tour
of “Americana Music” and I was invited
because the promoters thought the
Mosby Opera represented a piece of
American history.
Unfortunately, the Soviet Union collapsed and the concert tour was
cancelled.
The Grey Ghost acoustic opera and concerts was put on the shelf.

After the 1990 shelving of The Grey Ghost … two things happened:
1. I went back to technology, eventually leading a team of technical
super stars who migrated business applications and decades of
data from mainframe computers to newly architected desktop
technologies … at the National Geographic Society … to ensure
that NGS could continue to function beyond Y2K.
2. A number of musician friends continued to cover songs from the
Mosby opera … in Virginia, North Carolina, New Mexico and
Arizona. Some getting periodic airplay on radio stations.
I thought the Mosby days were over, but then I began hearing from
fellow musicians and previous concert goers who said, “Why don’t you
bring it back”?

So … here we are.
A little bit older and a lot
wiser … still holding on to
the fire in my belly to perform

The Grey Ghost Returns To The Stage

1. The Grey Ghost 25th Anniversary Concerts An Evening Inspired by Col. John Singleton Mosby

2. Over twenty years ago I spent three years researching the exploits of Col. John Mosby, The Grey Ghost, in and around an area of Virginia known as the Debatable Land. After three years of research, I spent another two years composing an acoustic rock opera which premiered on January 20, 1990 at the Gay Street Theatre in Washington, Va. The sold out premiere concert was followed with a series of concerts at performance venues and college campuses across Virginia and the mid-Atlantic throughout 1990.

3. The premiere concert was covered by northern Virginia media and PBS … which accounted for the overflow crowd at the concert. Following the premiere concert, segments of the video and audio tracks played on PBS and WAMU (American University) radio.

4. In the Fall of 1990, I was invited to join a group of well-known musicians and bands for a tour of the Soviet Union. It was planned that this would be a tour of “Americana Music” and I was invited because the promoters thought the Mosby Opera represented a piece of American history. Unfortunately, the Soviet Union collapsed and the concert tour was cancelled. The Grey Ghost acoustic opera and concerts was put on the shelf.

5. After the 1990 shelving of The Grey Ghost … two things happened: 1. I went back to technology, eventually leading a team of technical super stars who migrated business applications and decades of data from mainframe computers to newly architected desktop technologies … at the National Geographic Society … to ensure that NGS could continue to function beyond Y2K. 2. A number of musician friends continued to cover songs from the Mosby opera … in Virginia, North Carolina, New Mexico and Arizona. Some getting periodic airplay on radio stations. I thought the Mosby days were over, but then I began hearing from fellow musicians and previous concert goers who said, “Why don’t you bring it back”?

6. So … here we are. A little bit older and a lot wiser … still holding on to the fire in my belly to perform The Grey Ghost on stage. To bring The Grey Ghost back to life, I need your help.
