The Hay Wain- originally titled Landscape: Noon, depicts a rural
scene on the River Stour. It is one of a series of paintings by
Constable called the six-footers. A wagon is crossing the
stream near Flatford Mill and the cottage, belonged to
Constables father.
Critical Appreciation
The stream in the front grabs the viewers attention and a horse
cart is seemed to be crossing the stream. Then the attention goes
through the house nearby, the trees, the sky, a woman, a dog
staring at the cart and the vast meadows. Across the fields a
group of farmers are working.
The picture is portrayed as a real scene. The foreground seems to
be darker with the overcast sky above. The light is scattered and
diffused with the clouds and the patches of direct sunlight can be
seen in the meadows. There is a good play of light and shadow in
the painting. It is illustrated in the stream which is disturbed by
the wheels of the cart.
The painting seems to be very calm and peaceful. The artist used
dark shades of colours and the tones used are like they
complement each other and adding to the harmony of the
painting. The painting depicts rural lifestyle. The subjects of the
painting are clearly portrayed.
The painting is very rich in detailing and expression. The artist
tried to imitate nature as it is. The strokes of brush can be seen in
trees, stream and clouds.
