The hungry caterpillar

A caterpillar hatches from an egg on a leaf and spends the week eating through various fruits and vegetables, one item each day, as it remains hungry. By Saturday, the caterpillar has eaten through five oranges but is still hungry. After eating all the food it consumed during the week, the caterpillar gets a stomachache and is no longer little, but big and fat. It then creates a cocoon where it stays for two weeks before emerging as a beautiful butterfly.
The hungry caterpillar
- 1. I am retelling The Hungry Caterpillar story by Eric Carle.
- 2. In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf.
- 3. One Sunday morning the sun came up and pop! Out of the egg came a very hungry caterpillar.
- 4. On Sunday the caterpillar ate through 1 green leaf. He felt much better
- 5. On Monday he ate through 1 apple, but he was still hungry.
- 6. On Tuesday he ate through 2 pears, but he was still hungry
- 7. On Wednesday he ate through 3 plums, but he was still hungry
- 8. On Thursday he ate through 4 strawberries, but he was still hungry
- 9. On Friday he ate through 5 oranges, but he was still hungry.
- 10. On Saturday he ate through all this food. That night he had a stomach ache
- 11. Now he wasn’t hungry anymore, and he wasn’t a little caterpillar any more. He was a big fat caterpillar
- 12. He made a small house, called a cocoon. He stayed there for 2 weeks, until he nibbled a wee hole out.
- 13. He was a beautiful butterfly.
