The University of Cape Town (UCT) launched its Opencast lecture recording service in 2013. In 2017, a new Lecture Recording Policy was adopted, enabling opt-out recording for most undergraduate courses. This came into effect in July 2018, with an initial opt-out rate of around 40%. This presentation will describe the journal from a small pilot to a large-scale opt-out service, the campus response to the opt-out policy, and some of the debates which continue around the value and relevance of lecture recording on campus.
