THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION:
Workers' Conditions through the eyes
of Charles Chaplin
Celeste González Skender
ESO4
As for the description of the working conditions shown in the two clips from the film
(Modern Times), I reckon that in both short films, those are very hard and strict. In
the first one, I can see that Charlie Chaplin is exhausted and tired, also he had a very
short free time, like thirty seconds. In the second one, I think that it is a good work,
nevertheless, he didn't have a nice time, because the machine was hitting all the time
to Chaplin.
Answering the question “Why can workers not attend to personal needs while they
are working?”, in my opinion, the workers can't attend personal needs because it isn't
their work. Because their work is maybe to see how the other workers work, in other
words, the boss will punish them or tell the other workers to work harder if they aren't
working hard.
As far as free time from work is concerned, according to one of the clips from the
movie, when the guards saw that the workers were working very, very, very hard,
they allow them to rest a little bit: one second.
Regarding the image of the assembly line work the film conveys, I think, that it
means that if you (in your life) don't work hard or you don't make the highest effort in
something, you will have less time to do your work and everything will get
accumulated. Also, I think that it wants to say that if you don't work correctly,
according to the governor's laws you will be punished, but if you work correctly, you
will have a reward.
