John Marshall was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by President John Adams in 1801, but his appointment was controversial as the incoming president was Thomas Jefferson and his Democratic-Republican party, which was wary of federal power and the judiciary. As Chief Justice, Marshall established the Supreme Court's authority of judicial review in the 1803 case Marbury v. Madison, allowing it to strike down laws as unconstitutional.
