Genre characteristics
• There is the usual characteristics of the indie genre because there is a
narrative storyline
• This storyline is then based around personal issues of a relationship
which is then expressed through shots of the two together and then
apart whilst showing their facial expressions to convey their feelings
• However the usual convection of an indie band is also singing on a
stage with typical iconography which the audience doesn’t see but
instead the artist is a part of the audience
• This then makes the video more personal to the audience which could
be argues that its then conventional of the genre as its expressing
personal issues through the use of making the video more personal
enabling the audience to then relate

Relationship between lyrics and visuals
• The lyrics loosely relate to the song because its explaining how there
is a problem within a relationship and how they are distant
• This is then replicated by the shots of the people in the house that
are apart from each other looking away
• They also have depressing facial expressions to convey their emotions
of how they have a turbulent relationship
• It could be explaining issues within all relationships as well that could
be conveyed in by the use of characters in the night club having
uncomfortable encounters

Relationship between music and visuals
• The sound of the music is slow but then the tempo changes
throughout the song
• This is because the song is trying to reflect the visuals of the storyline
and how they are not in a stable relationship but instead there are
ups and downs which could bring the relationship to an end
• However the song has a soft tone which conveys the genre of the
band more than the visuals because it a calm and low pitched tone
giving more of a relaxed atmosphere instead of a tense atmosphere
that the visuals and the storyline might be trying to convey

Artist involvement and increased motifs
• The artist in hugely involved throughout the music video as a character of the storyline
and being the main focus of the video shown through multiple close up camera shot of
him singing and medium shots with his friends and well as cuts from him in each
scenario of the story
• This then might be showing his own personal issues that he wants to express through the
song as well as the association of the band and songs that are typically based around
personal issues
• The artist becoming the character in the video makes the audience sympathise as well as
relate because most of that age demographic will have experienced the same issues
• This will then lead the audience into finding the music more personal to them and
become part of their music type or preference
• The audience then becomes familiar with this type of music and their genre which could
then shape a particular demographic that buys into their other sigs or albums

Notion of looking and female portrayal
• The woman is has been sexualised because the main storyline was meeting the
woman as well as the personal issues within the characters relationship
• This then leads to shots of her being in bed making her seem as if she useless
unless she is being sexualised because other camera shots were of the two
characters within an argument and not a loving relationship
• When there are other women within the video, they mainly consists of people in
clubs that are dressed provocatively which could be representing them sexually in
order to increase the target audience
• The women in the video are also shown as drinking a lot showing them to look
vulnerable throughout the music video including most women
• The women within the video are also being objectifying throughout the video and
is evident in the end when the man is distracting by the women when he is
talking to his friends, which could be the intention of how the audience should
view her as well by looking at her through the male gaze

• There are no intertextual references as the music video is mainly
storyline based and does not reference anything else or links to any
other media

Performance or narrative
• The video is primarily narrative based
• This is because there are no camera shot of the band performing
within the music video
• There are camera shots consistently throughout the video of
amplified relationship between lyrics and visuals
• There is a storyline as the lyrics are narrating what’s going on in the
video and the actions of the character such as describing their
relationship and his feelings towards the girl represented through
came shots of them together and apart to show the issues within the
relationship

• It could be argued that there is a disruption on the relationship as there are
camera shot of them facing away from each other and have saddening
facial expressions however there isn’t a resolution at the end of the video

• There are not any characters showing as hero's or princesses because the
main focus of the storyline is the issues within their relationship
Strauss
• There’s binary opposites in the lighting because when he is in the house
with his girlfriend its light showing how he should be feeling however when
the camera shot changes to the nightclub, there are flashing night which
could convey how he doesn’t know how he actually feels and his feeling
are all over the place
