AB 52 was signed into law, granting California tribes more authority to protect culturally significant tribal landmarks and sites under the California Environmental Quality Act. The new law allows tribes to formally petition for the protection of landmarks that would otherwise lack resources to do so. It also gives tribes a formal role in the CEQA process to collaborate with developers on site protection. The legislation passed just before Temecula's Pu'éska Mountain Day, commemorating when the Pechanga Band stopped construction on a sacred mountain and secured its purchase to ensure future access to one of their most important cultural sites.Improving Financial Literacy for Native Americans

Active in politics, he has been ranked 39th on California’s list of the top 100 political movers and shakers. Outside of his role as tribal chairman, Mark Macarro serves as a member of the board of governors for the National Congress of the American Indians. A nonprofit organization, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) is the largest and oldest American Indian and Alaska Native organization that serves tribal governments and communities. The NCAI advocates for future generations of Native Americans through a number of youth programs, including the NCAI Youth Commission.

The NCAI Youth Commission gives young adults between the ages of 16 and 23 the opportunity to collaborate with tribal leaders to address issues affecting Native Americans. Geared toward youth with an interest in political science and tribal government, the commission allows members to learn about the structure of tribal politics and the organizational processes of the NCAI through their interaction with NCAI and tribal leaders.
