The pharaoh was the absolute ruler of ancient Egypt who was respected, obeyed, and feared by all Egyptians. As king, the pharaoh had religious, political, and military power and was responsible for defending Egypt, maintaining order, and taking care of the people. According to the Quran, the last pharaoh is responsible for murdering the sons of Israel and persecuting Moses, and died when the sea closed over him and his army as they pursued the Israelites after the parting of the Red Sea. Menes was considered the first pharaoh and Ramesses II the last.
