The story The Purple Hibiscus is set in Nigeria and follows an autocratic father who forces his strict Christian views on his family. His son refuses to follow his orders to attend church, worrying his sister for his safety. The author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, was born in Nigeria in 1977.

Title When I hear the name The Purple Hibiscus, I think of a large, beautiful tropical flower
Paraphrase This story is about a very strong Christian family in Nigeria. The father tends to be abusive when he become angry . The son ignores the fathers demands to attend church which causes his sister to fear for his safety
Connotation A few examples of imagery are apparent in thus story when the girl describes her father kneeling and the expression on his face. Another example of imagery is when she describes the tea pot. She describes the slightest details in any object. Mood is a very big part of this story, the mood is dark, scary and you start to feel an emotional attachment with the characters and fear for them.
Attitude The authors tone is very serious. Due to the seriousness of the topic which this is written about. The authors tone reflects this greatly as well.
Shifts One of the two shifts are when the son disobeys his fathers command and the other one is when at the end the son stands up for himslef
Title The Purple Hibiscus flower grows outside the families home and are also used to decorate the chirch
Theme The theme is that even though the world is constantly changing you should stick to your roots along with respecting other peoples beliefs who are around you

Paraphrase This guy is working at a grocery store and saving up his money for something important. His Mom wants him to move out to the nice country, but he doesnt want to work too hard to get there for nothing. Also its a waste of time for him to continue what he is doing so he is leaving. You should never argue with a crazy mind You oughta know by now You can pay Uncle Sam with the overtime Is that all you get for your money? And if that's what you have in mind Yaeh that's what your all about, Good luck movin up, cause I'm movin' out!
Connotation The Ryhme Scheme is showing in the first verse with lines 1&3, 6&8, and 4&9.There are similar rhyme scemes in each verse that help the song with its flow. The mood of the song is somewhat exasperated and negative, but at the same time the songs chorous shows the act of giving up and moving on from something because you dont want to progress through it anymore because you dont want it. Ex. Is that all you get for your money?.... Good luck movin up, cause I'm movin' out!
Attitude The writer is telling a story of specific people and giving examples of how they are working hard to make money but they aren't enjoying what they do so they feel its useless to continue the work. It has a negative tone but also an audacious tone because the writer shows confidence in his decision to move out.
Shifts The tone shifts from surrendering to becoming complacent. THe line changes from if thats moving up, then Im moving out to Good luck moving up cause Im moving out so this changes the song from a negative tone to a assured tone.

This becomes evident when the father reacts to his sons absence in church Pillow Case: The father is a pillow case to the son in the sense that his religious views are smothering Flashlight: The daughter is the flashlight in her family he shines an outside light on situations and provides another perspective. During the fight between the son and the father she is a onlooker looking at the fight. Perfume Bottle: The mother is a perfume bottle in the sense that she is very sweet on the inside and she easily spreads her love thought her family and in certain situations she is very fragile
Nigerian Church Attacks Attacks against Nigerian Christians are constant occurrences in Nigeria. They are targeted by Extremists of other religions constantly. On December 25 2011 during Christmas celebrations a bomb blast near a church killed at least 25 people. QuickTime and a decompressor are needed to see this picture.
