The Reality Theory Approach is a 7-step method for helping students change problematic behaviors. It involves establishing an authentic relationship with the student, having the student evaluate their current behavior, create an achievable action plan with steps to meet their needs and values, commit to the documented plan, revise if needed rather than make excuses, experience the consequences of their actions, and reward successes.

1. The Reality Theory Approach

decide how well it is working for them in meeting their
needs and values.
3) Students must lay out positive plans of action with
easily achievable steps.
4) Students must commit by documenting and signing
their plan.
5) If it doesnt work, revise the plan, rather than make
excuses. Never give up!
6) Students must see, feel, and hear the consequences
of their actions.
7) Reward successes.
