3. The women of Namuana village in
Fiji have a very strange ritual of
calling turtles from the sea.
The turtles will not rise, if any
member of the neighboring village
of Nabukelevu is present there at
the time.
There is a reason behind it.
4. Long ago in the lovely village of Namuana there lived
two beautiful women- Tinaicoboga, the wife of the chief
of Namuana, and their daughter Raudalice.
One day, they went to a far away place for fishing.
They were caught by the fishermen from neighboring
village Nabukelevu. The women begged for their lives,
but no one listened.
5. As the women were taken away, there
caused a storm in the sea and the canoe
was in danger of drowning.
The women turned into turtles and they
were thrown into the sea by the
fishermen.
The belief is that the turtles that live in
the Kadavu bay are the generation of these
two women.
The people of Namuana and Namukelevu
are great enemies even today.
