Anime is short for the English word
¡°animation¡±
Commonly used in English to refer
specifically to Japanese animation
Used in Japan to mean animation in general
Unlike American animation, Japanese anime
has a wide audience, not just children
3. ANIME
First inspiration for Japanese anime came
from Disney¡¯s short animated films
Themes include ¡°love and death, war and
peace, the historical past, and the far future¡±
Many based on manga, literary classics from
historical Japan and China, modern literature
from Japan and other nations

First came to US in 1960s - Osamu Tezuka¡¯s
The Mighty Atom, renamed Astroboy
¡°Anime were especially welcome because of
their lack of ethnic specificity¡±
The anime would be renamed, characters
would be renamed, and the plot would be
rewritten
Exact translations wouldn¡¯t make sense
because of language differences

television due to its depictions of violence¡±

Set in the year 2071
Earth¡¯s surface was virtually destroyed and is now
uninhabitable, so the population spread out across
the solar system
People live in colonies on Venus, Mars, Titan
(Saturn¡¯s largest moon), Callisto, Io, Europa,
Ganymede (some of Jupiter¡¯s moons), and space
stations
Crime syndicates have large influence in the solar
system
Bounty hunters are encouraged to capture criminals
10. Cowboy Bebop
Four main characters end up on the ship the Bebop
Spike Spiegel is a former member of a crime
syndicate
Jet Black is a former Inter-Solar System Police and
the owner of the Bebop
Faye Valentine is an amnesiac woken from a 54
year cryogenic sleep
Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV, formerly
known as Fran?oise Appledelhi is a genius hacker

Became famous in the ¡°The Solar System
Music Scene¡± in 2048
Described as a ¡°very hot & COOL & anarchy
& peace & hard & soft & potato-like band¡±
Name comes from ¡°how the performers wear
seatbelts to be safe while they play hardcore
jam sessions.¡±

They play different styles, including: big band jazz,
blues, acoustic ballads, hard rock, country, funk,
electronic, hip-hop and experimental
compositions/elements.
Especially known for making the whole soundtrack
for Cowboy Bebop
