ANIME

Anime is short for the English word
¡°animation¡±

Commonly used in English to refer
specifically to Japanese animation

Used in Japan to mean animation in general

Unlike American animation, Japanese anime
has a wide audience, not just children
ANIME

First inspiration for Japanese anime came
from Disney¡¯s short animated films

Themes include ¡°love and death, war and
peace, the historical past, and the far future¡±

Many based on manga, literary classics from
historical Japan and China, modern literature
from Japan and other nations
ANIME

First came to US in 1960s - Osamu Tezuka¡¯s
The Mighty Atom, renamed Astroboy
¡°Anime were especially welcome because of
their lack of ethnic specificity¡±
The anime would be renamed, characters
would be renamed, and the plot would be
rewritten
Exact translations wouldn¡¯t make sense
because of language differences
Yoko Kanno

 Born on March 18,
 1964 in Miyagi
