The Titainic was a Star Line steamship carriying the British flag. She was built by Harland and
Wolff of Belfast, Ireland. She was designed to be a marvel of modern safety technology. The press
began to call her ¡°unsinkable¡±.
2. TITANIC DESIGN
Her acommodations were the most modern and luxurious on any ocean. Included electric light
and heat in every room,a swimming-pool, a squash court¡ Besides, the Titanic was equipped
with wireless telegraph system.
The original design called for 32 lifeboats. However, White Star management reduced the
number to 20.
3. THE BEGINING OF THE END
April 1912
On April 1912, the Titanic commenced her voyage form England to New York with 2227
passengers and crew aboard. This voyage lures the ¡°very best people¡±. It also attracted many
poor inmigrants, hoping to start a new life in America or Canada.
4. THE SINKING
On the fifth day at sea. Titanic received five different ice-warnings, but the captain was not
overly concerned. At 11:40, a lookout spotted an iceberg dead ahead. The ship struck the
iceberg. At 2:20 a.m. she sank. Lost at sea were 1522 people, including pasengers and crew.
The 706 survivors, afloat in the ship¡¯s twenty lifeboats, were rescued.
