It was the River Liffey and its estuary which drew the first settlers to build the communities which became Dublin in Ireland. Night in June.
1922 Civil War of Ireland
The Civil War between north and south
A republican sniper. He had a face of a student, thin, eyes of a cold fanatic and the eyes of a man who was used to looking at death.
Old women: Her head was coverd by a tattered shawl. Sinper of the free staters - The enemy in the gray monster
A sniper is on a roof top in a warm night of June. Near O Connell Bridge. Here and there through the city machine guns and rifles broke the silence of the night. He knew his enemies were close and that any wrong movement could cause him life. As he was waiting for the right moment to get his enemies he his enemies he has an encounter with an enemy car and an informer. The sniper raised his rifle and fired and kill then. But the sniper on the other rooftop shot rang out and got him on his forearm. The sniper lay still for a long time nursing his wounded arm and planning his escape . Taking off his cap he placed it over the muzzle of his rifle, he fooled his enemy to belive he had killed him and watched the opportunity and killed the Free Stater sniper he watched as he fell and decided to go down and look for his company commander.
When the sniper reached the street he felt the curiosity as to the identity of the enemy sniper he had killed. The sniper went across the street. A machine gun tore up the ground around him but he escaped. But he would receive the most horrible moment of any war as he turned over the dead body he looked into his brothers face.
I enjoyed this short story because it was simple and easy to read. But the last part of the story had a great impact . Its a reflection of life before and life today. The war always has consequences that mark the lives of people. War is the same: men against men always.
-What was the republican snipers plan to escape from the free staters sniper? -When the sniper reached the street level he felt the curiosity to identify what? - What happened when he turned over the dead body?
